## If you are an Alcohol Server or venue manager in California, you already know how important it is to keep your [Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Certification training](https://www.userve.com/us/ca/alcohol-service/rbs-certification) up to date. With your livelihood and legal compliance on the line, staying ahead of your renewal date is critical.

Whether you are approaching your three-year mark or just want to stay prepared, understanding the California RBS renewal process will help you act confidently and on time.

In this guide, we break down everything you need to know about renewing your RBS Certificate in California, provide step-by-step guidance and share a handy RBS renewal checklist you can save for quick reference.

## Why Renewing Your California RBS Certificate Matters

Your California RBS Certificate is not just a piece of paper; it is your proof of legal authorization to sell or serve alcohol in the state. The [California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC)](https://www.abc.ca.gov/) requires all on-premises Alcohol Servers and managers to complete California RBS Certification training and pass a [certification exam](https://blog.userve.com/us/rbs-exam-answers-to-5-top-questions).

RBS certification is **valid for three years **from the date you pass the exam. If your certificate expires, you are not legally allowed to serve alcohol, and your employer could face fines and [penalties](https://blog.userve.com/us/california-rbs-training-requirements-penalties) for letting you work without it. Staying up to date ensures you remain compliant, employed and ready to serve responsibly.

## When Should You Renew Your California RBS Certificate?

Your **California RBS Certificate** is **valid for three years** from the date you pass your exam. You can start the renewal process **90 days** before your certificate’s expiration date. **This 90-day window is important.** If you complete training too early, it will not count toward your renewal, and you will have to retake it.

It is important that you **check the expiration date** of your current RBS Certificate and **set a reminder 90 days before it expires** to start the renewal process on time.

## What Happens if Your RBS Certificate Expires?

If you miss your renewal deadline and your RBS Certificate expires, you cannot legally serve alcohol in California until you are certified again. You will need to start from scratch, which includes paying the full fee, retaking an ABC-approved training program and passing the Alcohol Server certification exam.

To avoid disruptions to your employment, it is crucial to plan ahead and complete the renewal process within the **90-day window**.
